Eduardo Arellano Felix

Mexico City – Mexican authorities say they have formally launched extradition proceedings against an alleged cartel kingpin wanted by the United States for cocaine smuggling and murder.

The federal Attorney General's Office said Wednesday in a statement that Eduardo Arellano Felix will be sent to the high-security Altiplano prison west of Mexico City pending his possible extradition.

The 52-year-old Arellano Felix was arrested after a shootout Sunday in the border city of Tijuana.

Mexican authorities say he and his sister Enedina Arellano Felix took over the leadership of the Tijuana-based Arellano Felix cartel after several of their brothers were arrested or killed.
