President Calderón awards incentives to Beijing 2008 Olympic and Para-Olympic Medallists.

Mexico City - “We are determined to turn words into acts, because we know that this is the only opportunity we have to overhaul sports,” President Calderón declares.

During the awarding of incentives to Beijing 2008 Medalists, the President declared that in order to achieve this goal, a three-stage process has been begun, two of which have already been completed.

The first involves gathering proposals to improve national sports, submitted by groups familiar with sports; the second involves carrying out surveys and consultation sessions with the participation of Olympic and Para-Olymic medalists, high-performance sportsmen and trainers, PE teachers, researchers, academics, media representatives, sports associations and public institutions.

The third stage, currently underway, is to expand the consultation to ten cities in the country, where interviews will be carried out with athletes and experts in addition to the fact that next Tuesday, a dialogue session will be carried out with the sportspeople representing Mexico at the Beijing 2008 Games.

Accompanied by the 20 athletes who won medals at the Olympics in China, President Calderón said that his government provided the same financial incentives for Olympic or conventional and para-Olympic sportspeople.

These incentives consist of $400,000 pesos for each Olympic or para-Olympic gold medal winner, $300,000 pesos for silver medalists and $200,000 pesos for bronze medalists. Half this amount will be given to the sportspeople’s trainers.

"I would urge private enterprise, firms, promoters, sports commentators, the media, and state and municipal governments to regard conventional and para-Olympic sports as being equally valid."

The President declared that the main aim is now to expand sport and solve serious problems such as health, since Mexico is one of the countries with the highest obesity rates in the country, and addictions.

President Calderón urged the winners to become an example of effort and will-power for the new generations and to continue preparing for the Panamerican Games which will be held in Gaudalajara in 2011 and the Olympic Games to be held in London in 2012.
