President Calderón launches fleet of 600 new DICONSA freight trucks for distributing food on World Food Day.

Michoacán - President Felipe Calderón reported that in the Expenditure Budget Bill for 2009, submitted to Congress, Federal Government proposed an 11% increase in spending on social development and a 25% increase in social welfare programs.

On World Food Day, the President said that although the economic future will be difficult, government will not neglect the poorest people in the country and on the contrary, will increase resources to finance programs of assistance to the most disadvantaged group throughout the country.

He added that in order to guarantee maize supplies at reasonable prices and offset the violent fluctuations in the market, Mexico has created a strategic reserve for this grain.

“We will end the year with 450,000 tons of maize reserves, which will guarantee supplies for a full year, through these systems," declared President Calderón.

He added that to support the economies of the poorest families and despite worldwide adversity, the price of LICONSA milk has been maintained and will continue to be maintained at four pesos a liter, which will benefit 10 million persons.

In this respect, President Calderpon stated that his administration is committed to strengthening the operating and financial capacity of DICONSA, the organization in charge of taking food to over 40 million Mexicans living in the country's most isolated rural communities.

To match DICONSA’s efforts, his government has assigned a budget of $11.2 billion pesos, the highest in history.

After confirming the Mexican Government's commitment to guaranteeing food for the poorest people in the country, the President launched a fleet of 600 new DICONSA trucks.

He explained that this is the largest fleet this organization has purchased in many years and that it achieved this by putting its finances in order.
