Transcript: Weekend Beat - November 29

Hi, I'm William Michael and here's a look at headlines.

Tunnel Vision: After many lengthy discussions, the Mexican government has approved the allocation of $70 million pesos for the construction of a second tunnel to bypass Puerto Vallarta. They have also approved $200 million pesos for the building of a four-lane highway from El Tuito through Vallarta. Just when these projects will be started is another question.

Responsible Fun: Puerto Vallarta's public safety officials are stepping up their efforts against drunk drivers. Through education and stiff penalties, they want to drive home the fact that drinking and driving don't mix. Last Friday, 24 were arrested for driving under the influence. Please be responsible when driving home after a night on the town or better yet, take a taxi.

No Room at the Inn: Despite financial conditions, Puerto Vallarta recorded good tourism flow coming into high season. Average hotel occupancy is around 85 percent, up from last season. Some hotels are even reporting occupancy rates of 90 to 100 percent. Puerto Vallarta continues to be one of the top tourist destinations in Mexico.

Positive Training: Last weekend, Mayor Javier Bravo, along with former Olympic medalist Fernando Plata, opened a new Sports Gymnasium. The facility will promote healthy living for the youth of Vallarta. Located in Pitillal, the gym has the capacity to train kids in eight different disciplines including boxing, tae kwon do, artistic gymnastics, fencing, and others. The second phase includes an Olympic-size pool and a restaurant. It will surely be a space for the whole community to enjoy.

Shop 'til you Drop: A local businessman plans to invest $50 million US dollars to build an enormous shopping center on the large piece of land close to the entrance of Pitillal. The project proposes Wal-Mart as the anchor of the venture. It would be the second Wal-Mart in Puerto Vallarta.

Giving Gifts: Toys for Tots collects new toys for needy children in the community, to make their holiday season a little brighter. Saturday, December 13th is the annual golf fundraiser and on Sunday, December 14th there is a Gala Dinner. Ticket prices start at $900 pesos, but don't wait until the last minute. Last year's event was completely sold out! For more information and tickets, call me, William Michael at 322-294-0154 or Robert Bertrand at 223-0055.

Gone To The Dogs: The third annual Pet Picnic will be held at Daiquiri Dick's restaurant on December 6th. There will be boxed lunches, doggie bags, a raffle, contests and even a fashion show. Tickets are 225 in advance and 275 at the door, purchase them at the restaurant or The Deli. All the monies collected will go to Ayuda a los Animales to help fund high volume spay and neuter clinics.
