Honor guards carry the coffins of federal officials during a memorial service in the Campo de Marte military field in Mexico City, Thursday. Two flight recorders from the plane crash that killed Mexico's No. 2 government official were sent to the U.S. for examination, amid widespread speculation – but no evidence – that drug cartels were to blame. Authorities investigating the cause of a plane crash that killed Mexico’s interior minister this week ruled out a bomb, officials said Friday.

There was no trace of explosives in the wreckage, they said, and there were no signs of engine failure.

Both engines on the jet were functioning when the plane crashed in an upscale business district of Mexico City on Tuesday.

All nine people on the plane, including a former prosecutor in Mexico’s battle against drug cartels, and five people on the ground were killed in the crash.

Transportation Secretary Luis Téllez said the findings “strengthen the hypothesis that this was an accident.”
