Mexicans Honor Their Departed
email this pageprint this pageemail usReuters

In Mexico, people gathered in cemeteries to spend time with their departed loved ones and remember them during Day of the Dead celebrations.

The Day of the Dead festival is one of Mexico's most important holidays. It has its origins in a pre-Hispanic Aztec belief that the dead return to Earth one day each year to visit their loved ones.

Reuters' Pavithra George reports.

Vibrant displays and elaborate altars usher in the Day of the Dead celebrations in the old historical center of Mexico City.

Every year, Zocalo Square features a spectacular offering trying to rescue the traditions of this significant date. Altars are erected along the entire plaza remembering famous Mexican artists who have passed away or commemorating special moments of the city's history.

Reuters' Pavithra George reports.
