Dan Grippo will be presenting "Mexico on my Mind," at 10 am on Wednesday, January 28th at the IFC.
From 10 am to 12 noon on Wednesday, January 28th the Wise Wo-men of Vallarta welcome writer and historian Dan Grippo, who will be speaking at the International Friendship Club, Parian de la Puente #13 (upstairs), Libertad and Miramar in downtown Puerto Vallarta.

Dan holds a M.A. in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Latin American history. He is calling his presentation "Mexico on My Mind" and he will offer brief sketches of some of Mexico's most colorful historical figures: from the Spanish conquest, Hernán Cortés, Malina ("La Malinche"), and indigenous leaders Moctezuma and Cuauhtémoc; from the colonial period, the brilliant Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Jacinto Canek, leader of an indigenous uprising, and revolutionary priests Padre Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Padre José María Morelos; from the 19th century, Benito Juárez, dubbed "Mexico's Abe Lincoln," the Niños Heroes of Chapultepec Castle; and dictators Antonio López de Santa Anna and Porfírio Díaz.

The 20th century ushers in the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917, with figures Francisco Madero, Francisco (Pancho) Villa, and Emiliano Zapata; from the "cultural revolution" of the 1920s and 1930s, artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and Mexico's most beloved president, Lázaro Cárdenas; and from more recent times, the ski-masked, pipe smoking "Subcomandante Marcos" of the 1994 Zapatista uprising in Chiapas and Vicente Fox, who in 2000 broke the ruling party's 71-year hold on the Mexican presidency.

No admission charge. Donations of canned goods, clothing, toiletries, newspapers or magazines etc., for charity are greatly appreciated. For more information contact Anni Thiessen at wise_wo.menseminars(at)yahoo.com; Tish Hollaway at (322) 221-1505 or Darla Fowler at (322) 209-1880.
