The first Mexican Polar Bear Swim was held on the beach in Jaltemba Bay in Rincon de Guayabitos at 9 am New Year's Day. A small, but enthusiastic, crowd of just over a dozen people gathered at the ocean’s edge and jumped into the chilly waters.

Event organizers, Jody and Bob Butler and Danny Mclean from Nanaimo BC, are all too familiar with the Polar Bear events which are held annually in various locations in British Columbia and the world. They held the event to bring attention to climate change in this area. Water temperatures dipped into the high 70’s during the event.

"It is amazing how chilly it has become" said Kate Baron an International Falls resident, remarking on the 24°C weather. "The wind chill factor must be at least 25°C. Temperatures are expected to reach 27°C later today."

Rincon de Guayabitos is a small Mexican Resort Pueblo on the Pacific ocean approximately 50 kms north of Puerto Vallarta. It is the home to approximately 20,000 Canadian and American full and part time residents.
