Is tourism up or down? That is all people are talking about these days. Truth is Puerto Vallarta is on Sale! Looking for a vacation rental in paradise? New and special discounts available!
We are hearing many stories about tourism in Puerto Vallarta this year. Which ones are the most accurate? As reported previously by the airport authority, airline travel is up 6% for the year ending November 2008. In speaking with restaurant owners, we hear month to month from last year is off 6% to 30%. For lower to-mid range restaurants, I am hearing their business is up 50%. Hotels claim their occupancy is at 60% to 90%.
What we do know, is that the global economic crisis is certainly having an effect on everyone. When the US stock market declines 40% it sends a signal to US citizens and the world that a tightening of the belt is underway. People can not lose 40% of their savings without having a short-term effect on their pocket books and how they choose to spend their income. We also know during these economic challenges, people with money will always have money.
In addition, with the harsh winter, our northern neighbors in the United States and Canada are desperate to book last minute trips to get out of the cold. They may not be vacationing for two weeks, but they certainly will want a few days in our warm climate to re-energize their batteries.
