Offices of the Foreign Affairs Secretariat
Mexico City - The Mexican Government, through the Foreign Affairs Secretariat, hailed the announcement of the ceasefire declared by the parties in conflicto in the Gaza Strip. He also hoped that these actions will contribute to creating a propitious environment for the efforts underway to achieve lasting understanding and peace.

Within this context, Mexico, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, called on both parties to comply with Resolution 1860 (2009) of this Organization, adopted on January 8.

This resolution calls for a permanent end to hostilities that will lead to the withdrawal of Israeli troops; stop the violence aimed at the civil population; put an end to terrorist acts; permit access to humanitarian aid; lift Israeli economic restrictions in Gaza; stop illegal arms trading to the Gaza Strip and reinforce efforts by both parties and the international community to achieve an agreement in the region that will permit peaceful coexistence between the Israeli and Palestinian states.

In this spirit, the Mexican government supports all the efforts aimed at achieving these ends, particularly the work carried out by the UN Secretary General and the Egyptian and French initiative which convened a meeting yesterday between several heads of state and government in Sharm el Sheik, Egypt.
