Mexico City - Thousands of protesters filled streets in Mexico City saying they are angry that the government has frozen the price of gasoline but not diesel fuel.

Many of the demonstrators were from rural areas that depend on diesel to run farm equipment, BBC reported Saturday. Protesters also blamed President Felipe Calderon for not boosting the Mexican economy, the British broadcaster reported.

BBC said the Mexican economy has been hit by a fall in the amount of money sent home by Mexicans living abroad.

Remittances from Mexicans living abroad - mainly in the United States - have fallen for the first time since record-keeping began in 1995. After oil revenues, remittances from abroad account for Mexico's second largest source of foreign income.
