Mexico City - Mexico deported more illegal Guatemalan migrants than the U.S. in 2007 and 2008, according to information reaching here from Guatemala City on Thursday.

In 2008, Mexico repatriated 36,362 Guatemalans, a 26.5 percent reduction from a year ago, while the United States deported 27,929people, which represented a 21 percent increase, the General Direction of Migration from Guatemala (DMG) said.

In 2007, Mexico deported 49,475 Guatemalans and U.S. deported 23,062.

Analysts said despite a reduction in 2008, Mexico still deported more Guatemalans than the U.S., which showed the Mexican government's strong resolution to take action against illegal migrants from Guatemala.

In 2008, Mexico deported 87,896 foreigners, among whom 36,364 were Guatemalans, accounting for 41.37 percent.

Some 170,000 Guatemalans arrive in Mexico each year, in an attempt to enter the U.S., DMG authorities said.

In 2008, 21 percent of illegal Guatemalan migrants were detained in Mexico and 16 percent in the United States.

There are 1,200,000 Guatemalans living in U.S., among whom 720,000 are illegal, the DMG said.
