2nd Annual Valentine's Tennis Cup at El Tigre
email this pageprint this pageemail usBob Cohen - PVNN

The cost to participate is $250 pesos regardless if you are a man or woman, so since it's a Valentine's Cup the women get more for the entry fee.
The El Tigre Sports and Racquet Club at Paradise Village announced their 2nd Annual Valentine's Day Cup tennis tournament will be held from Thursday, February 12th - Saturday, February 14th. Tennis Director Norberto Aguirre will be running the tournament, which has three separate competitions.

The women will be allowed to play in all three competitions, but the men can only play in the mixed doubles. The other two competitions will be women's singles and women's doubles. The categories will be at the "C" and "D" levels in all three competitions, but there will be many "B" players competing and Norberto stated that even "D" will be quite competitive.

The format is different than most tournaments and will utilize a round robin format of play. Every player will play one set against every player in their division and the points earned will be totaled to determine the winner and finalist, who will both receive trophies. The first two win 6 games will win the set except when the score is tied 5-5. In this case a 7 point tiebreak will be played to determine the winner of the set. An example is if Player A defeats Player B 6-2, A will earn 6 points and B will earn 2 points. The totals will be carried through the whole event, so a lost set if close is not as damaging as the traditional format of play.

Play will begin from 8 AM - Noon on Thursday for women's singles and women's double. Play will continue on Friday and Saturday during the same hours when all competitors play each other and the champion and finalist are determined. The afternoon mixed doubles sessions will also begin on Thursday at 4 PM - 7 PM and will conclude Friday when the winners are determined.

The trophy presentation and a luncheon will be held Saturday at 3 PM after the finish of the tournament. Trophies will be awarded to the winners and finalists of each of the three competitions, so it is possible for one woman to walk away with a lot of hardware.

The cost to participate is $250 pesos regardless if you are a man or woman, so since it's a Valentine's Cup the women get more for the entry fee. Registration ends on Wednesday, February 11th at 11 AM. To register, one can call 226-8195 or cell phone 322-205-7274 or email Norberto at najtennis(at)hotmail.com. The tournament will be fun and competitive; come out to El Tigre to play at their beautiful tennis facility.
