Mexico asks Canada to extradite Gomez Urrutia to face fraud charges. (2006 photo)
Mexico City - Mexico is seeking the extradition of a mining union leader who moved to Canada after being accused of fraud.

Napoleon Gomez Urrutia has been accused of misappropriating $55 million in funds that Grupo Mexico paid into a trust in 2004 related to the privatization of the country's largest copper mine, Cananea, and nearby La Caridad. He left for Canada in 2006 when several warrants were issued for his arrest.

The union denies he misused the money.

Gomez Urrutia has been at loggerheads with copper miner Grupo Mexico SAB for years. The union has maintained a strike since July 2007 at Cananea and two other mines to demand safer conditions. Mine conditions have come under scrutiny after 63 miners died in 2006.
