17th Annual Banderas Bay Regatta - Race Day 2
email this pageprint this pageemail usDick Williams - PVNN

It looks like Thursdays brisk winds took their toll as only 36 of the original 42 boats started day 2 of the Banderas Bay Regatta. Race day 2 was also different in that the larger and faster boats (Classes A and B) sailed a 23 mile course that extended from the start / finish line off of Nuevo Vallarta Beach to just west of La Cruz de Juancaxtle then to a point offshore of the entrance to Marina Vallarta.

Based on projected wind speeds for Friday afternoon a last minute decision was made by the race committee to have boats in Class C & D sail the shorter 10 mile course. Class E was always scheduled to sail the shorter course.

This 23 mile course made for some interesting contest for the faster boats. In Class A, Cirque and her skipper Louis Kruk and his crew seem to be running away from the rest of the fleet. In Class B however the situation is just the opposite with Profligate, Humu Humu, and Pantera running in a virtual dead although Profligate is ever so slightly ahead.

In Class C, Joaquin Bargallo and his crew on Tenza are dominating the fleet as is Class D entry Rose of Sharon with Byron Chamberlain at the helm.

Eros with skipper Shelly Ward is currently leading Class E, close behind in second place is skipper Charles Naslund. Of special interest here is that these two Class E entries are sailing with crew that is made up of Vallarta Yacht Club junior sailing program students.

These standings should make for some very intense contests during the final race on Saturday. Even though some boats have comfortable leads at this point in time "stuff" happens. Sails tear, spinnakers get dumped into the water, crews miss the turn marks so, as one world famous sports figure was once quoted as saying, "the game ain't over 'till it's over".
