Los Pinos - Last Friday, Mexican President Felipe Calderón received British musician Peter Gabriel, actor Diego Luna, singer Saúl Hernández, and Tamaryn Nelson, Witness Director for Latin America and the Caribbean and Patricia Cervantes, a member of the Justice for our Daughters organization.

During the meeting, Peter Gabriel told President Calderón of the importance of Witness, an organization that provides technological tools such as video cameras for citizens throughout the world to enable them to record, document and denounce human rights abuses.

The visitors asked the President to avoid ignoring the fight against the violence committed against women and to strive to improve legislation on the issue and conduct investigations that will reduce the scope for impunity.

President Calderón pledged to combat any abuse of authority and to promote the repairs of damage to victims. At the same time, he confirmed his government’s will to combat impunity. He said that federal forces are collaborating with the local authorities to solve the cases of feminicides.

He therefore pledged to follow up all cases, such as that suffered by Patricia Cervantes and the victims of violence in Ciudad Juárez through a website, in collaboration with the Witness organization.

He also hailed the work done by the organizations that promote the defense of human rights and pointed out that the conviction and participation of each of these encourages greater advances by the institutions in the three orders of government.
