National Technology Prize-Giving Ceremony 2008
Mexico City - During the 10th National Technology Prize-Giving ceremony, President Felipe Calderón declared that knowledge is crucial to the well-being and progress of 21st century societies.

He hailed the workers and directors of the prize-winning firms since despite the worldwide economic situation, they have made every effort to transform Mexico and enable it to compete with other economies.

In the Adolfo López Mateos Hall of Los Pinos, he said that the challenges of the current crisis should not serve as an excuse for failing to search for underlying solutions to the problems of our development.

“You should feel proud of your success, because despite the profound global economic crisis, you have resisted the temptation to simply regret the situation or do things as usual, with a certain amount of resignation. Instead, you have made the extra effort Mexico requires to transform itself and compete and win in the world," he said.

Accompanied by Economy Secretary Gerardo Ruiz Mateos, President Calderón urged the country to make quality, technology and innovation essential, irreplaceable values in a new productive culture, since that is the only way we will be able to progress.

The President said that one of the challenges of his administration is to speed up Mexico's scientific and technological progress.

He said that his government has assigned 700 million pesos for the Development and Technology Innovation Fund, 600 million pesos for the Technological Innovation Fund for High Added Value Business and an additional $1.2 billion pesos for the Technological Innovation Fund for Firms' Competitiveness, in other words, $2.5 billion pesos, an unprecedented amount for this administration.

"If you combine efforts and wills, I have no doubt that civil servants, scientists, technologists, businessmen and workers will meet the challenges of our time," he declared.
