Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón announced the investment of five billion dollars over the next five years by Cisco Systems, a leading firm in the area of telecommunications.

In the Adolfo López Mateos Hall, the President said that this is a sign of the firm's confidence in Mexico during the current international economic crisis.

“This has not stopped leading firms at the international level from continuing to acknowledge the potential of the Mexican economy and trusting in the country," he said.

Accompanied by Secretaries of the Economy Gerardo Ruiz Mateos; Public Education, Alonso Lujambio Irazábal, , Ernesto Cordero Arroyo, the Mexican president declared that technology is crucial to development and that technique explains the advances of civilization and man's capacity for progress.

“Cisco is a key ally in the country’s development,” said President Calderón adding that Federal Government, in conjunction with this firm, has implemented telecommunications systems that will permit more direct communication between Cabinet members and government's main offices and hoped that this connection would link the world's main leaders.

"We are implementing telecommunication systems with Cisco Systems that will enable us to have more direct, virtual and presential communication not only between cabinet members and the directors of government's most important offices but one day, I hope this will reach the most important network of decision-makers in the country in both Federal Government and local government and the public and private sector," he added.

The President said that Mexico has everything it needs to transform itself, which is the goal of his administration. As predicted by several of the world's major firms, a key factor for achieving this is that our country should be capable of fully assuming its potential through better technological instruments.

“And this means that government will invest increasing amounts in technological issues and that the states will also invest increasing amounts in technology and that as part of technological investment, we will invest increasing amounts in training more and better students, more and better engineers and technicians throughout the country, who will fully be able to meet Mexico's technological challenge," he said.

He added that technology offers society numerous benefits, ranging from improving health, firms’ productivity and within government itself, the operating capacities of public structures, in security and for protecting citizens.

At the event, President Felipe Calderón witnessed the signing of three collaboration agreements between Federal Government, with the Economy, Public Education and Social Development Secretariats, with Cisco Systems.

“As one of the world's leading firms, Cisco Systems not only confirms its trust in Mexico but has signed an alliance in our presence to promote the education and economy sector and even the social sector in a joint collaboration effort between Cisco and the Mexican government," he said.
