XVI International Sports Classic Is On
email this pageprint this pageemail usBob Cohen - PVNN

The 16th Annual International Sports Classic starts on Friday. Come out and enjoy a full weekend of basketball and about 90 youth soccer teams.
The International Sports Classic co-founder Howard Kelsey arrived in Puerto Vallarta late Sunday night and on his agenda the following morning was a meeting with Mayor Javier Bravo to discuss a number of issues regarding the 16th Annual Classic. Joining Howard was Armando Cosilion who is the founder and organizer of the Copa Vallarta youth soccer tournament that in recent years has been a part of the Classic. Also in attendance for the meeting was the Mayor's chief of staff Lucio Meta Garcia.

Last week Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez imposed a ban on the State of Jalisco that closed facilities that drew groups of people until May 18th. As well as bars and movie theaters, the governor last Friday ordered gyms, museums, cemeteries and sports arenas to stay shut. That meant that the Annual Sports Classic was in jeopardy and Kelsey's trip from Vancouver would be only a vacation.

After a four hour meeting the Mayor unofficially permitted the games to be played but without spectators. Basketball and soccer without spectators? Doesn't sound that interesting for tourists in town for the popular annual event. If that was the best that could be done then the Classic would be played and all but one basketball team would make the trip from Canada, the United States and all over Mexico.

On Tuesday, the Governor lifted the ban according to Kelsey to permit all Jalisco beach and tourist destinations to go back to business and pleasure as normal. This was confirmed by news services as well on Tuesday. Governor Emilio Gonzalez has given bars, clubs and cinemas in 98 of Jalisco's 125 municipalities the green light to reopen.

Folks, come out this weekend and enjoy a full weekend of basketball and about 90 youth soccer teams competing as in previous years.

Tourism is taking a turn for the good in Puerto Vallarta.
