Mexico City - At Saturday afternoon’s press conference, Foreign Affairs Secretary Patricia Espinosa Cantellano reported on the international actions being carried out regarding the health emergency affecting the country.

The Foreign Affairs Secretary said that efforts have focused on three areas: Protecting Mexicans abroad; Coordinating international cooperation efforts, and the defense and active promotion of Mexican interests outside the country.

Regarding the first area, the Secretary said that this is a key priority for the Foreign Affairs Secretariat, which is why it has redoubled its consular protection efforts and declared that, "Wherever there are Mexicans, Mexico will be behind them.”

As for international cooperation efforts, the Foreign Affairs Secretariat is taking part in the coordination of the shipping and distribution of aid from various countries such as China, Spain, Japan, the United States and Korea.

Since the current situation is a global emergency that is not restricted to either Mexico or Mexicans, the Secretariat expressed her regret over the actions and reactions certain countries have had towards Mexicans abroad.

She added that the world has been given clear, truthful, scientifically based information to prevent these situations.

During the press conference, Patricia Espinosa recalled that the World Health Organization recommended not closing borders or suspending flights to and from Mexico.

Lastly, the Foreign Affairs Secretariat confirmed Federal Government’s commitment to offering consular support and protection to Mexicans abroad through Mexico's overseas representations and announced the following telephones: 3686-5864 and 65 (of the Head Offices of Consular Protection) and 3686-6036 and 6037 (of the Diplomatic Liaison Center). She also mentioned the fact that the telephones and addresses of Mexican embassies and consulates worldwide are available at the www.sre.gob.mx portal.
