The UN General Assembly re-elected Mexico, with 175 votes, as a member of the Human Rights Council for the period from 2009 to 2012.
Mexico was re-elected, with 175 votes, as a member of the Human Rights Council for the period from 2009 to 2012 within the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the criteria that must be met to belong to the Council of Human Rights, Mexico was elected because of its contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights throughout the world, its recent national programs and the set of voluntary promises and contributions it has made in order to continue strengthening the national situation in this sphere.

As part of its campaign to be re-elected to this organization, Mexico pledged to play an active role in the Council and to promote timely, effective solutions to situations in the world in which there are serious, systematic human rights violations. At the national level, the Mexican government pledged to maintain its openness to the scrutiny of international human rights organizations, advance towards the harmonization of national legislation with international guidelines on this issue and reinforce efforts to consolidate structural changes in the country in this field.

The Council was created in 2006 as the highest UN organization for the promotion and protection of human rights throughout the world. Mexico was one of the main promoters of the creation of the Council and presided over the first year of its work. The council comprises 47 Member States, eight of which are in the Latin American and Caribbean Group. Council members perform their functions for a period of three years and may seek re-election for an additional period.

Another 17 countries were elected, together with Mexico, for the period from 2009 to 2012.
