Ten international and two Mexican teams took part in the Puerto Vallarta 2009 International Beach Volleyball Tournament, which were held at the Agustín Flores Contreras Sports Stadium in Puerto Vallarta from June 12-14.

In preparation for the beach volleyball games, a sand arena was constructed inside the Puerto Vallarta sports stadium, which will be utilized for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Qualifier that will be taking place from June 17-21, 2009.

The stadium has a seating capacity of 3000, so there was plenty of room for all of the beach volleyball fans who came out to cheer on their favorite teams from Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, United States, Italy, Romania, Guatemala, Poland, Greece and Mexico.

After two days of elimination rounds, teams from Brazil, USA, Greece and Poland participated in the semi-final matches for first, second and third place, with Brazil taking home the gold and $1500 USD in prize money. The US came in second, taking home the silver medal and $1200 USD, and Greece came in third, winning the bronze and $1000 USD.

The awards ceremony was presided over by Mayor Javier Bravo Carvajal, along with the two top men in the Puerto Vallarta sports department, Rafael Castro and Cesar Macias; Ludwig Estrada Virgen of the Jalisco Tourism Board and Miguel Gonzalez of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board.

Mayor Bravo took the opportunity to congratulate the organizers of the event and invite them to continue bringing future events to Puerto Vallarta with such events, which are a great way of promoting Puerto Vallarta.

He also invited the crowds to return to the Puerto Vallarta Sports Stadium on Wednesday, for the opening games of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer qualifiers, which will be held from June 17-21, 2009, which are also free and open to the public.
