Time to Jam: Vallarta Song Writing Contest
email this pageprint this pageemail usLaura Gelezunas - PVNN

Local author, musician and now composer, David Lyons, hopes to strum up Puerto Vallarta tourism by launching a song writing contest on BanderasNews.

David's idea to initiate a Puerto Vallarta song writing contest came from his desire to rekindle the images songs about Mexico have always invoked.

The Puerto Vallarta song writing contest is in its preliminary stages, and many details have yet to be finalized. But we will keep you posted as they develop.
One of the best ways to generate excitement is to have a contest. Local author, musician and now composer, David Lyons, hopes to strum up enthusiasm by launching a song writing contest.

"The music of Mexico first made me want to visit this country," says David, "I'd like to hear a song about Puerto Vallarta that make others want to visit as well. I want the contest to showcase some of the extraordinary talent we have in this area."

The contest is in its very preliminary stages and many details have yet to be finalized. But we will keep you posted as they develop.

David has made Puerto Vallarta home for almost 15 years. He claims having trained at Juliard. That is, the Juliard School of Automotive Repair. Actually, he is self-taught, a fact he says is abundantly clear to the average listener. He sang professionally as a young man and was inspired to try it again when he moved here. David was fortunate enough to find venues in town and in recent years he re-taught himself to play the guitar and built up a repertoire of jazz standards.

His song, Es Vallarta Para Mi, describes the physical beauty, the friendly people, and obviously the mountains and the ocean:

Lyrics:

On the shores of Banderas Bay, lies my home of Puerto Vallarta
I love the warm sun on my face, and the kiss of the mist from the sea
With friendships to last me a lifetime, here's where I'll live till I die
Where the mountains run down to the sea, Es Vallarta Para Mi

To live in this tropical splendor, is a gift I treasure each day
Strolling the white sandy shores, a palapa giving me shade
With guitars strumming softly around me, I live with a song in my heart
Where the mountains run down to the sea, Es Vallarta Para Mi

Bridge:
When the sun sets on Puerto Vallarta
And the stars take their place in the night
Angels whisper on the soft ocean breeze
Telling me everything is alright

I give thanks to the Lord up above, for my home in Puerto Vallarta
There's no place that I'd rather be, than this enchanting town by the sea
The dolphins at play on the waters seem to share in the joy that I feel
Where the mountains run down to the sea
Es Vallarta, es Vallarta, Es Vallarta Para Mi

It's a simple composition which he hopes will do nothing more than inspire others to put their own images of Puerto Vallarta to music and if we do so, he thinks we will have a whale of a competition.

The Es Vallarta Para Mi music video was produced by Video Diva Productions. The images collected show different areas of the bay and highlight sights not printed on every brochure. It shows the unequaled beauty of the landscape and its people.
After having spent 10 years in the world of US broadcast news, Laura Gelezunas decided to unleash her skills on Puerto Vallarta by opening Video Diva Productions, a full-service, professional digital video company.
