President Felipe Calderón presents awards to outstanding members of Federal Police Command Center.
Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón said that Mexico is currently facing a historical challenge of becoming a safe country, as regards law and order, proving that his government and the federal forces acted in time to put a stop to crime and organized crime.

He added that the Federal Police, together with the Armed Forces, have enabled the authorities to be on the offensive against crime, since the country's enemies have been pushed back and live under the threat that their violent actions will not go unpunished.

“Federal Police, the Armed Forces and the Federal Attorney's Office acted in time to put an end to this scourge and stop criminal acts that had spread significantly throughout various points of the national territory,” he said.

During the presentation of awards to Federal Police Officers, the President said that the Administration's actions against criminals make no distinction and are designed to guarantee Mexicans their freedom and leave future generations a more orderly Mexico.

“And these actions have made it clear that Federal Government, in the fulfillment of his duty, decisively combats all criminal organizations, without distinction, and all criminals that threaten the lives, security and peace of Mexicans anywhere in the country," he explained.

During the event, which was also attended by Secretaries of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, and the Navy, Mariano Francisco Saynez Mendoza; and Attorney General, Eduardo Medina Mora, the President hailed the work of federal police and urged them not to resign themselves to leaving the country to those that wish to impose their authority and take over Mexican families' future.

“We are not going to resign ourselves to leaving the country to those who, through violence and the abuse of the law and others wish to impose their own force, authority and profits and, those who wish to take over families’ lives, assets and future. We won’t allow it,” he said.

He said that the work of the police has been crucial to fighting organized crime, particularly abduction and has led to the arrest of 989 kidnappers and the release of over 800 victims.

President Calderón added that a long list of bosses, area directors and leaders of criminal gangs have been arrested. These people regard Federal Police as a threat, since their strength and expansion have reduced their illegal business.

“Because they know that the Federal Police are discovering their lairs. Because they know that they will no longer be able to go unpunished or enjoy the social or political coverage they were used to. Because they know that there is an institution that will go after them and will defend Mexican families who used to be completely unprotected, in several places," he said.

Criminals today know this and are afraid, which is why they fear being caught and brought to justice, said the President. That is why Mexico now needs policemen known for their honesty and loyalty to the country, their strength and bravery, people one can trust in and entrust one's life to under risky circumstances.

That is why, said the President, Federal Government is making an effort to reconstruct the Federal Police to have a more integral police force, capable of ensuring ever greater responsibilities in the fight against crime.

“We need new officers and to renew and strengthen the solid core of this institution. We need honest, well-trained, well-armed police officers who will always protect people," he said.

He urged the states and municipalities to purge and reinforce police corps in order to guarantee safety on the streets.

At the Federal Police Command Center, President Calderón unveiled a Wall of Honor showing the names of officers who have died during the call of duty, During his address, he asked the audience to honor their memory with minute of silence, adding that their deaths will not go unpunished or be forgotten.

“I have called them heroes and that is how I see them, because a hero is a person who gives his life for his country or for others. When Mexico is a safe, free, fair country, this will be due to the sacrifice of the children that today we miss and honor because their legacy of loyalty is undoubtedly the best example to be followed by their fellow Federal Police officers and all Mexicans," he said.
