The service hopes to address the needs of working women, seniors who need to get around in the morning and afternoon and young women who go out at night.
During the next few days, Puebla's State Secretariat of Communications and Transportation will begin a female-only taxi service in the capital.

The program hopes to meet an increased demand for public transportation, said Operations and Transportation Director Anuar Musalem Valencia.

Women will drive the pink taxis, and will have GPS technology, a built-in panic button and an independent operations base. This is the state's women-only taxi service, Musalem said.

"There are three sectors that we hope to attend to with this service," Musalem said. "Working women, seniors who need to get around in the morning and afternoon and young women who go out at night."

Initially, 30 "Pink Taxis" will operate in the capital and metropolitan zone and each will have its own name. Taxistas receive 180 hours of hands-on and classroom practice before they go out on the street. With two weeks left, the training is half over.

The women learn mechanics, such as how to change a tire, transit laws and driving under different conditions.

Pink Taxi representative Alejandro del Castillo Chávez said drivers will have all of the accessories and tools they need. The 5 million-peso project will attend to an important clientele, he said, which makes up 60 percent of public transportation users.
