Martin Parra, Director of Tennis at the Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club, announced the return of the ITF Copa Pacifico at a recent press conference.
The 4th Annual Copa Pacifico 2009 Mexico Futures 15 tennis tournament will once again be held at the Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club from November 9th - November 14th. After three successful years at the Canto Del Sol and providing top quality professional play, the $10,000 USD tournament promises to bring competitive professionals to Puerto Vallarta again this year, as announced by Tennis Director Martin Parra.

The ITF (International Tennis Federation) in recent years has had a series of futures played in four or five different cities in Mexico and the tournament preceding the Copa Pacifico will be held in Guadalajara. There are not only Mexican professionals competing, but players representing seven different countries are among the 18 direct entrants into the tournament and their world ranking range from 250 and above.

The direct entries are given to the top 18 players with the highest world rankings. Additionally there will be a grueling two day qualification tournament to determine eight more entrants. Four wild card entries will be given and two special acceptance entries will be awarded. The special acceptance entries can be given for a variety of reasons, the most common is for a player in the finals of a preceding tournament that can't get to Puerto Vallarta in time. All rules are ITF regulated.

There will be singles play in the field of 32 players that make up the total field and there will also be doubles competition. Points are of the utmost importance as players that earn points move up in the world rankings at a faster rate and can compete for larger prize purses. Futures tournaments have many levels and the $10,000 level is a lower one and they increase until players reach the Challenger level where prize purses generally start at $30,000. Players that reach the Challenger levels are often 100+ in the world, but many enter larger ATP tournaments, which is the goal of every professional tennis player.

Martin Parra added an extra treat this year and has a separate tournament of 16 local professionals that runs October 27th - 31st that will have only one prize. The winner of the tournament will receive an entry into the Copa Pacifico.

The main sponsors of the event which is open to the public are the Canto Del Sol Resort, Villas Vallarta Resort, Corona, the City of Puerto Vallarta and the ITF. For more information, call the Canto Del Sol at (322) 226-0123, extension 4187. Come on out and join the fun! There's a possibility that one could be watching a future star on the ATP tennis circuit.
