BanderasNews reporter Liv Boungh talks with solo acoustic bluesman, John Mooney, who entertained Puerto Vallarta audiences at Casa Iguana Hotel & Residences in Mismaloya with three performances of his signature syncopated delta blues on November 20, 21, 22, 2009.
Considered by many to be the world’s greatest solo acoustic bluesman, John Mooney brings his signature syncopated delta blues to beautiful Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for three incredible performances at the Casa Iguana Hotel & Residences in Magical Mismaloya.

John Mooney, disciple of the one and only Delta Blues Pioneer “Son House” who’s other well known protégé’s includes Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, struck up a friendship with the Father of Delta Blues in 1971 and spent the next 5 years being schooled in music and survival from his mentor.

In 1976 after finding his way to the Crescent City of New Orleans, Mooney began a 4 year odyssey alongside The Father of New Orleans Piano Professor Longhair, most notably recognized for his induction into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and receiving a posthumous Grammy Award for his early recording “House Party New Orleans Style.”

Since 1981 Mooney has been touring with his group, the Bluesiana Band, and performing Solo throughout the U.S., Canada, Panama, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Festival appearances across the globe include the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Newport Folk Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, and a yearly appearance at New Orleans’ world renowned Jazz & Heritage Festival.

In a world of technically proficient players who all sound alike, Mooney has developed one of the most distinctive and easily identifiable guitar and vocal signatures of anyone alive today. His snaky, slide-drenched interpretations of New Orleans mambo and second-line rhythms come by wayof the Mississippi Delta and weave a seriously funky groove through theblues that can turn your backbone to jelly.

Couple that with a voice that could fill a room without a microphone, resonant with emotion and soaring and moaning with the ghosts of Son House and Professor Longhair, and you have a seductive musical cocktail that leaves you deliriously drunk with pleasure every time.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Boca Bento Latin Grill is located inside the Casa Iguana Resort at Avenida 5 de Mayo 455 in Mismaloya. For more information or to make your reservations, call (322) 228-0186 or visit BocaBento.com.
