Halfway through his six-year term, President Felipe Calderon on Sunday said that he will send Congress a series of electoral and tax proposals.

Speaking alongside lawmakers, leaders from different parties, secretaries and advisors, the National Action Party (PAN) president said that he will soon ask Congress to consider allowing politicians to be reelected and take measures to eliminate agencies and secretariats.

Despite Congress' recent approval of a spending package that will increase an array of taxes, Calderon called for more efforts to expand tax collection.

"Let's do it not just so that the country carries out its responsibility, let's do it to raise the competitiveness of the economy," Calderon said.

Like his state of the country address on Sept. 2, Calderon called for "profound changes," beyond partisan lines. "I think there's a lot of Mexicans with very good intentions and wishes to make them happen, but all of a sudden, my impression is that what prevails at the end of the day are calculating politics, party dogma, stubborn positions, the defense of private interests... but (we need) to put the interests of the country first."

Calderon met with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villarraigosa on Sunday. Voicing their support for immigration reform, the leaders discussed U.S. President Barack Obama's efforts, along with environmental protection. The president and mayor also exchanged ideas on improving the economy.
