Church Quiet on Mexico City's Same-Sex Marriage

Due to the characteristics of same-sex marriage, it should be considered as a civil union as opposed to marriage.
- Bishop Onésimo Cepeda
Mexico City - The bishop of Ecatepec, State of Mexico, Onésimo Cepeda, said this week the approval of same-sex marriage and potential child adoption is “foolish.”

“It is foolish because it cannot be considered as marriage. If they are not married they cannot start a family and if they cannot start a family they cannot have children,” he said.

In an interview before the beginning of the commemorative ceremony for José María Morelos y Pavón's death, the bishop expressed his rejection of the new law.

The bishop added that due to the characteristics of same-sex marriage, it should be considered as a civil union as opposed to marriage. Civil unions in the capital have been legal since 2007.

Mexico City's Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a bill allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.

On the other hand, the Vatican's spokesperson, Federico Lombardi, omitted any comment regarding the measure.

Lombardi explained that the Catholic Church See would not issue an opinion, saying it is up to Mexican bishops to discuss it, since “it is a local affair.”

On Dec. 16, during a general audience in the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI described as “inequitable” the laws that consider same-sex marriages as legitimate.

The Pope expressed his concern regarding the law.

“The only 'equitable' laws,” he said, “are those that reject the legitimacy of abortion, euthanasia and unrestrained genetic experimentation; the laws that respect the dignity of marriage between a man and a woman.”
