Pipis scores a run in the bottom of the 5th inning to tie the game 13-13 as the catcher rushes in an attempt to tag the runner who crossed home plate safely.
The Puerto Vallarta Little League completed their second week of play Saturday under sunny skies and with another enthusiastic crowd cheering the kids on. This week the highlight game wasn't played on the big field, but was played between Los Picosos and Pipis Restaurant in the 9-11 year old age group in an afternoon game.

In the opening games Teatro Limon played the inexperienced Las Rocas in a 12-14 year old game at 11:00 AM on the main field. Las Rocas is made up mostly of kids from the American School in the Marina and most of the players have never played baseball before. Teatro Limon is in their second season and were runner ups in the inaugural season and most of their players are from the Ixtapa area. The most important positions in Little League are pitcher and catcher and to be successful a team needs three pitchers that can consistently throw strikes. The importance of a good catcher is that there are many wild pitches and passed balls and many runs are scored without a base hit. Las Rocas found themselves needing help in each position and will improve with practice, but were shut out by Teatro Limon 11-0 via the "mercy rule". Teatro Limon improved to 2-0 and Las Rocas fell to 0-2.

The second game on the main field was between BanderasNews.com and Sage Hill Lightning, last years champions. Sage Hill is made up of players from Bucerias and they were at the field at 11:00 AM but were not to be found at game time. What we later found out is that they requested to play in the early game each week or wouldn't be able to play. Thus, BanderasNews.com won the game by forfeit and moved to 2-0 for the season and in a tie with Teatro Limon, who they will face next week for the league lead in the 12-14 year old division. Sage Hill fell to 0-2.

After getting the final out, Los Picosos celebrate at the pitcher's mound after a thrilling victory over Pipis Restaurant 14-13.
In the right field corner, the powerful PV Yankees faced the Mexlend Martillos. The Yankees are perhaps at this point the most solid team in the 9-11 year old division and have quality players at key positions while Mexlend is a new team and have a bunch of youngsters that are new to baseball. The do have a solid coach in Osiris Garcia who works with them daily during the week and they showed improvement after losing last week. The game was within 10 runs until the 5th inning when the Yankees scored 5 runs and the Martillos needed 3 runs to extend the game to the 6th inning. They couldn't score and the Yankees won 22-9 and moved to 2-0 and Mexlend fell to 0-2.

The thriller was played concurrently in the left field corner as Los Picosos faced Pipis Restaurant. Los Picosos are in their second season in the league and Pipis are in their inaugural season. Los Picosos won their opener and Pips were soundly beaten in their first game. Los Picosos scored three runs in the top of the 1st inning and then Pipis scored 8 times in the bottom half of the inning with parents cheering the youngsters on from the stands nearby. Each team scored a run in the 2nd and Los Picosos added one more in the 3rd to cut into the lead, but still trailed 9-5. Los Picosos scored two more in the 4th but Pipis answered with 3 runs to extend their lead to 12-7 after 4 innings.

Los Picosos exploded for 6 runs in the 5th inning to take a 13-12 lead and Pipis tied the game in the bottom of the 5th. Los Picosos added one more run in the top of the 6th, the final inning and Pipis had their half of the 6th left to win, extend or lose the game. With two men out Pipis singled and on the next pitch the runner stole 2nd base. With the crowd standing and screaming, rooting for their respective kid's team Pipis next batter struck out to end the thrilling game. Final score was 14-13 in favor of Los Picosos who moved to 2-0 as Pipis valiant effort left them at 0-2 but with plenty of hope for a successful season.

It was voted on by league officials to help accommodate Sage Hill by using both the baseball and softball field for the 11:00 AM early games for the teams in the 12-14 year old division and the younger kids will play at the regular scheduled 12:30 PM time.
