Tonight, President Barack Obama will deliver the annual State of the Union Address to a Joint Session of Congress and the Citizens of the United States. Please join us to for a live simulcast of this important address to the nation’s citizens. In addition to the President’s address, we will be showing the film, Rethink Afghanistan, a 2009 documentary, with frequent updates for remaining current, by acclaimed film maker, Robert Greenwald, about the ongoing war in Afghanistan. This full-length documentary features experts from Afghanistan, the United States and Russia, among others discussing critical issues like military escalation, how escalation will affect Pakistan and the surrounding region, the cost of war, civilian casualties and the rights of Afghan women. The documentary is a skeptical view of America’s war strategies in several segments: Troops, Pakistan, Cost of War, Women of Afghanistan, Civilian Casualties, Security, and Solutions. Mr. Greenwald is well-known in some progressive circles for his films about war profiteers, Wal-Mart’s corporate practices, and the Fox News Channel. His company, Brave New Films, uses documentary expertise to further public debate about political issues. This film is especially time-sensitive. President Obama has already ordered an escalation of the troop levels in Afghanistan. And, on top of a record $708 billion request for Defense Department funds for next year, President Obama wants another $33 billion for the unpopular Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The first part of the film, titled “More Troops + Afghanistan = Catastrophe,” reflects the filmmaker’s opposition to any further troop escalation and the film makes a powerful case against continuing the war. The International Friendship Club is located on the second floor of the HSBC bank building on the corner of Insurgentes and Libertad. The film will begin promptly at 7 PM, so you should plan to arrive a bit before. Drinks and popcorn available.
