The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) chose Cesar Duarte Jaquez, 46, as its nominee for governor of Chihuahua state, party officers announced.

The news ended bitter behind-the-scenes politicking during the past year for the nomination. After losing a hard-fought campaign, ex-Juárez Mayor Hector "Teto" Murguia Lardizabal, one of the PRI's main contenders, threw his support behind Duarte at a PRI celebration Saturday.

Duarte's acceptance speech in Chihuahua City during the weekend included blaming Mexican President Felipe Calderon for rising unemployment and violence in Mexico's northern border state. Calderon belongs to the rival National Action Party (PAN).

Duarte is a native of Hidalgo de Parral, Chihuahua, a lawyer and graduate of the Autonomous University of Juárez (UACJ). He served as a state legislator and as a federal congressman.

The PAN in Chihuahua state is expected to select a candidate for governor through a primary election.

Carlos Borruel Baquera, 45, the Chihuahua City mayor, and Juan Blanco Zaldivar, the former Chihuahua City mayor, were mentioned as possible top candidates for the PAN nomination.

On Sunday, the PAN's state headquarters verified Borruel's formal registration as a gubernatorial candidate for the party. After registering, he vowed "to stay away from personal attacks during the campaign and respect his fellow contenders."

Borruel, who took a leave of absence to run for governor, is from Chihuahua City and received a master's degree in administration from the Chihuahua Technological Institute.
go to originalThe PRI and the PAN are the dominant parties in Chihuahua state. Others parties, including the left-of-center Partido Revolucionario Democratico (PRD), which is strong in south and central Mexico, have failed to develop significant followings in either Juárez or Chihuahua City, the state's two largest cities.

Governors in Mexico serve for six years and wield enormous power over their states. This year, the election for Chihuahua state governor falls on July 4.
