The world's best windsurfers will compete in the Nextel Bicentennial Mexico Cup Regatta.
Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico - A spectacular four-day Windsurfing Competition, with more than four categories, will be among the most exciting races in the Nextel Bicentennial Mexico Cup Regatta, which will be held at the Riviera Nayarit Marina at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on Banderas Bay. Both events are the highlights of the month-long Riviera Nayarit Nautical Extravaganza, the largest nautical and beach sports festival ever held in Mexico.

The Windsurf Competition will feature four categories: Junior Olympic Class, Olympic RSX Class, Experience Formula Class and Open Class. From March 1st-6th, ten regattas will be raced to determine the winners, including two elimination competitions. It will take place on Banderas Bay in Riviera Nayarit, from the beach stretching from Flamingos to Bucerias. For more information and event schedules, visit NauticalExtravaganza.com.

Windsurfing was founded in the 1930's when a surfing pioneer, Tom Blake, tired of paddling in search of good waves, decided to try using wind to propel his surfboard. After several experiments, he found a way to affix a mast and sail, naming his new invention a "sailing surfboard". This new sport did not gain great acceptance until 1964, when Newman Darby designed the first windsurfer. Today it is a worldwide sport, for leisure and competition.
