For any questions, comments and/or if you would like to assist in this upcoming blood drive, please contact me at 044-322-107-7007 or pamela(at)healthcareresourcespv.com.
It seems like nearly every day, we are sending out an urgent plea for blood donors – for all types of blood. This is a continual and very desperate situation in the Banderas Bay area.

On March 24, 2010 from 8 am until 3 pm, there will be a major blood drive at Los Mangos Library (Biblioteca Los Mangos) located at Av. Francisco Villa 1001, Colonia Versalles, Puerto Vallarta.

I am not just urging you, I am begging you, to donate blood if you can! The next patient in need could be you or one of your loved ones.

If you do not qualify as a donor, then please consider assisting with spreading the word, handing out flyers or hanging up posters, donating some cookies, juice, or items to be put in the gift bags that will be given to all donors.

Yes – it is true. Blood donation requirements in Mexico are different than in the United States and Canada. These are not the Blood Bank rules – these are the rules from the Health Department in Mexico. They are what they are, so we must work even harder at finding and educating potential donors. These requirements are:

• Over 18 years old – maximum age 65
• Weight of at least 50 kilos
• Good health (meaning donor feels well, can perform normal activities and has no chronic conditions)
• No alcohol beverages in the past 48 hours. (Come on – I know you can do it!)
• Fasting for a minimum of 4 hours and no more than 8 hours.

Do Not donate blood if you:

• Have AIDS or positive HIV test, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Papiloma, Chagas Disease, Herpes or engage in high risk sex.

• Have any of the following conditions: unexplained weight loss or night sweats, blue or purple spots in your mouth or on your skin, swollen lymph nodes for more than one month, white spots or unusual sores in your mouth, a cough that will not go away, diarrhea that will not go away, fever.

Other Disqualifiers:

• Have used drugs, steroids or hormones
• Have had vaccines, antibiotics and certain medications in the last month
• Have had sexual contact with more than three people in the last five years
• Are male who has had sexual contact with another male
• Have tattoos on your body. *Note: This could be waived if the tattoos are more than six years old and were not obtained in Mexico.
• Are pregnant or are menstruating.

Once donated, the following exams are performed on the blood: HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Brucella, Syphilis, VDRL, Chagas, Hematocrit, Hemoglobin, Rh Factor, Blood Type, Inverse and Direct Group, Type and Cross match compatibility. You will receive the results of all of these lab tests as well as a donor card.

Please consider donating the Gift of Life. It is a daily battle searching for blood for critical patients in all of our local hospitals.

For any questions, comments and/or if you would like to assist in this upcoming blood drive, please contact me at Pamela(at)HealthCareResourcesPV.com or 044-322-107-7007.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the March 24, 2010 Puerto Vallarta Blood Drive. This life-saving event will take place from 8 am until 3 pm at Los Mangos Library – Av. Francisco Villa #1001 in Colonia Versalles.
