Ciudad Juarez, Mexico – Authorities detained a gang leader who is suspected in the killings of a US consulate worker in Mexico, her husband and another man, a Mexican military spokesman said Monday.

"I can confirm there has been the arrest of a person in connection with the (US) consulate case," said Enrique Torres, spokesman for the military operation in Ciudad Juarez. He said the army carried out the arrest on Friday.

The man arrested, Ricardo Valles, 45, is originially from Mexico and a US resident, Mexican media have reported.

Valles is considered a boss of the Los Aztecas gang, alleged to work as hitmen for the powerful Juarez drug cartel.

The gang was blamed for almost simultaneous attacks March 13 in which a US consulate worker and her husband, both Americans, were killed, as was a Mexican man who was married to another consulate staffer.
