Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra at Los Arcos in Vallarta. (For more information, please contact Celine Fevrier at (322) 223-7040 Ext. 2942, or chiefconcierge(at)premiereonline.com.mx.)
UPDATE 05/07: The sponsor of this event, Via Cultural, has cancelled the May 7 and May 14 preparatory workshops. However, the Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra concert "Orchestral Fantasies" of May 15 will still take place at 8:30 pm at the scheduled place - Plaza de la Hermandad, at the beach end of calle San Salvador.

Here is a wonderful opportunity to see a lesser known facet of Vallarta's culture – an initiative to promote culture and educate the Vallartan public through musical, visual and scenic art performances.

This initiative is spearheaded by Via Cultural, an organization sponsored by Villa Premiere Hotel & Spa and supported by Vallarta's school board education authorities and by La Biblioteca Los Mangos. A series of cultural events will take place throughout May and June 2010, with the initial focus on classical music, usually a poor cousin in our beach town... Given that this year we also celebrate Mexico's 200th anniversary, the music will have a decidedly Mexican flavour.

The first major Via Cultural event will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 7:00 pm, which happens to be Teachers' Day. The Concert, Orchestral Fantasies, performed by the Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra, will take place at La Plaza de la Hermandad, situated on the beach end of San Salvador street, between Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Spa and Villa Premiere Hotel & Spa, off Calle Mιxico. Admission is free.

This concert will be preceded by the following three preparatory workshops open to the public at large, all held in the Salon Villa of the Villa Premiere Hotel & Spa, at San Salvador No. 117, Col. 5 de diciembre:

• Friday, April 30 at 7:30 pm – with the theme "What Is An Orchestra?" - presented by Giselda Rea Signoret, Director of the Orchestra's Organization.

• Friday, May 7 at 7:30 pm - "What Does a Conductor Do?" - presented by Juan Franco, Conductor of the Orchestra.

• Friday, May 14 at 7:30 pm - "Concert Music and Its Authors" - presented by Composer Miguel Almaguer.

Simultaneous Spanish/English translation will be provided during these workshops. The admission to the workshops is also free.

The purpose of these workshops is to prepare the public, including the young ones to the beauty and intricacies of classical music, to teach them the joy of attending concerts, and develop in them the urge to pick up an instrument and learn to play it well.

The same workshops will also be given to Vallarta's school children one day before each of the dates shown above, i.e. on Thursdays, in two sittings – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, to accommodate the two shifts of the Vallarta school system. The workshops for school children will take place at the Biblioteca Los Mangos.

The Participants:

The Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of the most important cultural institutions of Jalisco. Established five years ago, it aims at training young musicians and educating new segments of the public. Its base of 40 Jalisco students is supplemented by over 90 young musicians from various states of Mexico, associated through exchanges and joint sessions, thus forming the largest non-governmental music network of the country.

The Orchestra has performed anywhere from the smallest stages of rural Jalisco and Nayarit to the most important venues of Mexico, Ecuador and Europe. Barely two years in its life, in 2007 it has toured France and Belgium, where it obtained the First Prize "Cum Laude" at the European Festival of Youth in Neerpelt, Belgium.

The Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra, which has received well known international soloists and conductors and is now conducted by Juan Franco, renews itself with innovative programing and a fresh attitude to classical music. It is structured as a non-profit organization.

Giselda Rea Signoret, President of the OSIJUG AC (the non profit organization sustaining the Guadalajara Youth Symphony Orchestra), is an outstanding and well known multi-talented artist and cultural educator and activist. Her accomplishments range from painting and sculpture to canto, piano, ballet and scenography.

We look forward to seeing you all at these special events – and to witness what our community does to promote culture and education in our beautiful Vallarta!
