Mexico will show 11 free films in quake-torn Haiti, the foreign ministry said in a statement Friday.

Under a joint program with Mexico's largest movie theater chain Cinepolis, the free movie showings aim to offer Haitians light-hearted entertainment to help ease the sorrow caused by the Jan. 12 quake, the statement said.

It is estimated that more than 70,000 Haitians in the capital of Port-au-Prince and nearby cities will see the movies.

The films include short ones dealing with survival, unity and citizen participation. There will also be films made by quake survivors as well as family movies. They will have French or Creole audio and subtitles.

This program was launched in 2005 to share the cinematic experience with communities devastated by poverty or natural disasters.
