Oaxaca, Mexico — A caravan of European and Mexican activists carrying humanitarian aid has been attacked by gunmen outside a conflictive town in Oaxaca state.

The state government says at least one Mexican woman was wounded as the caravan of about 40 leftist activists and journalists approached San Juan Copala.

The Tiempo newspaper of Oaxaca's state capital cited an anonymous witness who said two people were killed in the ambush. A group participating in the caravan also says two people were killed in Tuesday's attack. Police arrived Wednesday but say they have no information on any deaths.

San Juan Copala is the scene of a long-running dispute between a group demanding greater local autonomy and militants with links to the state's ruling party.
