It's interesting how a tight budget can push you towards being creative when it comes to putting food in your body. The great thing about Puerto Vallarta is that you can enjoy 'high end' dining - or you can 'dine on the cheap.'

The other day I decided it was time to give home cooking a break and explore the streets for something to eat. I walked to the Malecón, heading south towards the newer area, when I hit the jackpot! What I found what was literally a hole in the wall, a brick oven and three animated Italian guys! The name of the place is "Bella Napoli" an Italian eatery located at #11 Augustine Rodriguez Street, right along side the parking building in downtown Puerto Vallarta.

So what makes this pizza place different from the rest? Well, if you're anything like me, I love watching Italian people speak. Their style and expression is a show in itself. Bella Napoli is owned by three young Italian guys; Augustino is from Napoli, Emanuel (nicknamed "Manu") is from Napoli and Alejandro is from Rome. At the age of 13, their dream was to move to Mexico and open a Pizzeria. On November 9th of last year, they made that dream come true.

There is nothing fancy about this place. They offer you wooden crates to sit on or the option of take out. Unfortunately, they do not have a liquor license. However, with some discretion, they allow you to bring your own beer or wine. I saw one group drinking wine from paper cones! Now how is that for original?

Apart from being inexpensive, the food was delicious! They offer a variety of pizzas, sold whole or by the slice. They also have a specialty, a favourite of mine, called, "Chavatta." The idea is similar to a pita bread sandwich but shaped like a baguette. What makes this sandwich tasty is the fact that the bread is baked fresh right there in the brick oven.

You can order off the menu or invent your own sandwich using the ingredients offered. I had a Vegetarian Chavatta, which was hearty and cost only $40 pesos. I left with my tummy full and content, which can only mean that I will be visiting them on a regular basis.

Located at #11 Augustine Rodriguez, right along side the parking structure on the Malecón, Bella Napoli is open daily from 11 am to 11 pm.
