The Mexlend Martillos with their banner after winning the semifinals in the 9-11 year old division, advancing to the fianls.
The 12-14 year old division finally got down to the final two teams, Teatro Limon and BanderasNews who began a best of three series to determine the champion of the 12-14 year old division. This was the first game and crucial in a best of three series as the loser would need to win two consecutive games for the championship.

Teatro Limon, who was undefeated during the regular season were missing their best player, centerfielder and pitcher Oswaldo Cazares who was out of town with his family. That changed the strategy of the team as they generally pitched Cazares for the final three innings. BanderasNews was also short a player. Jocelyn Ontiveros was the starting pitcher for Teatro Limon and she did a superb job in her three innings, leaving a 4-3 lead to her relief staff. The only runs she allowed were two big home run blasts by Francisco Ramon in the 1st and 3rd innings.

The PV Yankees after winning their semifinal series and advanced to the finals.
After a scoreless 4th inning, two misplayed long fly balls by Teatro Limon in the 5th inning allowed four runs to score and they trailed 7-4 going into the bottom of the 5th. Catcher Eron Ulloa blasted his second homer of the game to lead off against reliever Francisco Ramon and it was followed by another home run that closed the lead to 7-6 in what became a nail biting game. BanderasNews added an insurance run in the 6th and Ramon retired the side in order to give BanderasNews an 8-6 victory in the opening game of the best of three series. Teatro Limon is now faced with the task of winning the next two games to win the championship.

The 9-11 year old division continued their playoffs Saturday. Top seed and once beaten PV Yankees took on 4th seeded Pipis Restaurant and 2nd seeded and once beaten Mexlend Martillos faced 3rd seeded and twice beaten Los Picosos.

Mexlend Martillo parents had a banner made and proudly cheered their team to victory. Here a group of them pose for the camera.
In left field, by far the largest and loudest crowd this season greeted the Martillos and Los Picosos. Los Picosos was looking to even the series and force a deciding third game. Parents from both teams made banners and flags to support their teams. Of all parents these two teams have had the best support by the public all year and Saturday had the stands filled and people also on the field.

After a 2-2 opening inning, Mexlend exploded for nine runs in the top of the 2nd inning as Los Picosos answered with four, giving the Martillos an 11-6 lead. Mexlend extended the lead to 16-8 after the 3rd when both teams made all their substitutions. Los Picosos bench was stronger and they held the Martillos scoreless in the 4th and 5th while scoring seven runs in those innings to close the lead to a slim 16-15 with the 6th and final inning remaining.

In the final inning, Pipis tries to score but the PV Yankees were too strong as they recorded the final out and their trip to the finals.
With two outs and an insurance run needed Oscar Rizo, the starting and winning pitcher blasted a three run home run to deep centerfield to give the Martillos a 19-15 lead going into the bottom of the 6th. Rizo hit two home runs last week in a 26-9 victory. Los Picosos got a man on base but couldn't score. Los Picosos deserve congratulations for their fine season and pushing this game to the final inning after their devastating loss last week. Congratulations to the Mexlend Martillos as they reached the finals of the 9-11 year old division.

The Yankees-Pipis game was played on the main baseball field and Mexlend-Picosos played in the left field corner of the baseball field. The PV Yankees flexed their muscles early like last week and scored 15 runs in the top of the 2nd after trailing 4-2 after the 1st inning. Pipis responded with 6 runs in their half of the 2nd to cut the lead to 17-10, but a seven run 3rd and Pipis failing to score gave the Yankees a 24-10 lead when both teams put in all their substitutes.

Mexlend relief pitcher also records the final out of the game as his team advances to the finals.
They played evenly the last two innings but the Yankees won 29-17 as the game was stopped due to the mercy rule after five innings. Congratulations to Pipis for playing solid ball in their first season in the league. The Yankees earned the right to play for the 9-11 year old championship against Mexlend in a battle of once beaten teams. Expect a real battle in this series.

The level of play has remarkably improved over the last few weeks. This ended the regular season as the playoffs begin this Thursday at 4:00 PM between VIP and Homes & Living. There will be a best of five series to determine the champions of the league. Come out and enjoy the fun.

Don't forget the 9-10 year old Jalisco playoffs that will be held for the first time ever in Puerto Vallarta, the weekend of May 28th - May 30th. We still need financial help to host the playoffs. Anyone that is interested in making a donation for the playoffs, please contact me at a1abob(at)yaoo.com or bob(at)banderasnews.com. These funds will also be utilized for travel expenses the following weekend when the 11-12 all stars go to Guadalajara for the Jalisco playoffs in that age division.

The league would like to recognize and thank Bruce Byng and his wife Julia who have sponsored a team each of the first two seasons of the league and held a fundraising dinner at their gourmet restaurant, Teatro Limon last Monday night. The dinner, which included a silent auction and other donations helped raise enough for the playoffs in Puerto Vallarta and most probably the funds needed for the Guadalajara trip as well. The Puerto Vallarta Little League thanks you for your generosity and ongoing support and participation in the league.

Your support provides endless benefits for Banderas Bay area kids, who will develop the qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork and physical well-being by participating in Puerto Vallarta Little League Baseball.
