Mexico's April Same-Store Sales Down 1.0 Pct

Mexico City - Same-store sales in Mexico fell 1.0 percent in April, hit by a calendar effect and ending a four-month run of growth, Mexican retailers group ANTAD said on Wednesday.

In April, Mexican supermarkets' same-store sales, or those recorded at stores that have been open for at least 12 months, fell 2.4 percent.

Easter Week this year started in March, while last year it was in April. In the month a year ago, shoppers also rushed to stores to stock up on medical supplies and food as Mexico briefly shut down during a swine flu scare.

However, same-store sales at department stores rose 6.5 percent in April this year versus 2009, underscoring Mexico's economic recovery after a deep recession last year.

Some economists see Mexico's economy growing more than 5 percent this year, although still not enough to compensate for a 6.5 percent fall in gross domestic product in 2009 in the country's worst recession since the 1930s.

Mexico's retail sector is led by Wal-Mart de Mexico (WALMEXV.MX), which dominates smaller competitors like Soriana (SORIANAB.MX) and Comercial Mexicana (COMEUBC.MX).
