Mexico's armed forces and police have seized around 33 tons of cocaine since the start of Felipe Calderon's presidential term on Dec. 1, 2006, Calderon said this week.

Calderon said that authorities had also seized 110 tons of marijuana and, in the last two weeks, 160 tons of chemicals used in the production of synthetic drugs, in Manzanillo, a port on Mexico's Pacific Coast.

"Here in Tamaulipas, like in other states severely threatened by organized crime, federal authorities have shown heroic commitment to fight with determination every day," Calderon told a ceremony marking Navy Day in Tampico, the main port in the northern state of Tamaulipas.

"Our goal is to give local authorities the time and the opportunity to build their own institutions, staff, their local police corps with trustworthy people who have no connection to criminals."

Calderon has deployed federal forces to Mexico's most violent cities to battle traffickers that have set up networks in Mexico in order to smuggle drugs into the United States, the world's largest market for drugs.

Last year, there were 6,587 drug-related murders in the country. Mexico's government has urged the U.S. to do more to support Mexico in its battle against organized crime by reducing the flow of guns and money in southern border areas.
