Police Take Control of Grupo Mexico Cananea

Mexico City - Police have taken control of Mexico's biggest copper mine, owned by Grupo Mexico, where workers have been on strike for nearly three years, local media reported on Monday.

El Excelsior daily said some 2,000 policemen late on Sunday surprised striking miners occupying the Cananea mine and forced them out with tear gas. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Grupo Mexico and union officials were not immediately available for comment.

Dozens of miners remained inside the mine over the weekend, blocking the entrance and defying a February court ruling that the mine was in force majeure due to damage from the strike. The ruling opened the way for Grupo Mexico to cancel contracts, hire new staff and resume production.

Cananea used to produce 40 percent of Mexico's copper.
