Tijuana — They painted their faces, wrapped themselves in flags, wore funny hats, and chanted, “Sí se puede — Yes we can.”

A traffic circle in Tijuana’s Rio Zone became a sea of green jerseys Sunday as soccer fans converged at the foot of a statue of the Aztec ruler Cuauhtemoc to watch Mexico face Argentina in the World Cup.

Housewives, students, factory workers from across the city were among the thousands of spectators gathered before a giant screen. They fell silent as Argentina pulled ahead but erupted in roars of support when Mexico scored a goal.

While disappointed at their team’s 3-1 loss, many fans managed to shrug it off. “Mexico did what it could,” said Mariana Magallon, 21, of Rosarito Beach. “The game was well played — and well lost.”

Tijuana resident Oscar Enriquez painted his face green, white and red, the colors of Mexico’s flag.

“It’s our way to forget about all the country’s problems, whether it’s crime or the economy,” said Enriquez, 22. “This is when all Mexicans are together.”
