President Calderón states that the visit by the Kuwaiti Prime Minister marks a new stage in relations between the two countries.
President Felipe Calderón received Sheikh Nasser al Sabah, Kuwaiti Prime Minister, as part of his official visit to Mexico, during the 35th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two countries.

The Mexican president said that Mexico, like Kuwait, is a state that knows how to defend its national sovereignty, its freedoms and institutions. The two are also tireless promoters of peace, security and international law.

“You are received by a society that believes in the force of law rather than in the law of force.

The defense of the free determination of nations is a key principle of Mexican foreign policy, which is why Mexico has always defended the position of countries whose sovereignty has been attacked,” he said.

The President, accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala, said that this visit by the Kuwaiti Prime Minister will mark the start of a new and more fruitful stage of relations between the two countries.

“Looking towards the future, today the links between Mexico and Kuwait have acquired a new spirit of affection, respect and understanding.

We hope that your presence will strengthen economic links and the cooperation for development between our nations for the benefit of both Mexicans and Kuwaitis.

By doing so, we will be creating more opportunities for the well-being and progress of our societies and establishing the bases for closer links," he said.

During this visit, President Calderón and the Prime Minister witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to Establish a Consultation Mechanism in Matters of Common Interest between the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

I would like to thank His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Prime Minister of Kuwait, for his official visit to our country.

During our meeting, the Prime Minister and myself dealt with various aspects of the bilateral agenda. In particular, I congratulated the Prime Minister on Kuwait’s decision to set up an embassy in Mexico, which will undoubtedly help strengthen relations between the two countries.

Today we discussed ways for Mexico and Kuwait to expand their cooperation links and take advantage of the potential of their economies in order to intensify trade and above all, investment flows.

We acknowledged the convergence of our interests, particularly in sectors such as the energy, tourist and infrastructure sectors. In these areas, Kuwait and Mexico can work together and complement each other favorably, since our country offers enormous advantages for investment, which Kuwait will be able to exploit.

The Prime Minister and I agreed over the need to promoter greater links between businessmen, in order to arrange direct commercial operations, thereby reducing the triangulation between countries.

We have advanced towards the strengthening of our economic relations, as shown by the passage of the Agreement to Avoid Double Taxation and Prevent Tax Avoidance in Income Tax, signed last year.

On this basis, we will continue working to construct a more productive relationship in the future. We are committed to a swift conclusion of the negotiations of an agreement for the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments.

This will help further facilitate the exchange of investment between our countries and encourage trade.

As regards global issues, the Prime Minister and I confirmed our commitment to working on behalf of efforts to achieve an agreement that will take into account the needs and interests of all countries during the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP-16, to be held in Cancún at the end of this year.

Members of the media

I repeat the friendship and affection Mexicans feel for the noble people of Kuwait and hope this will be the start of a new era of brotherhood between our countries.

Thank you
