Mexico City - A prison riot in northern Mexico left two inmates dead and 10 wounded, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

The riot occurred late Sunday afternoon in Ciudad Juarez, the most violent city in Mexico. About 150 visitors were in the prison at the time of the uprising, Notimex reported.

"It was horrible," Elvira Hernandez said, according to Notimex. "We were in the visiting area when the disturbance began. The inmates took some of the people and we were locked in a tunnel so nothing would happen to us."

Federal and state police regained control of the prison Sunday night. The authorities also took control the city prison in Juarez to prevent violence from springing up there, Notimex said.
