Quake Shakes Mexico's Pacific Coast

A strong earthquake rattled the Pacific coast of southwestern Mexico on Monday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The 6.1 magnitude quake struck at 7:12 p.m. (10:12 p.m ET) and was centered about 185 miles southwest of Puerto Vallarta, according to the USGS. The epicenter of the earthquake was about six miles underground.
Shortly after the quake, civil protection officials in the Mexican state of Jalisco said there were no reports of damage, and they were investigating the situation. No tsunami warnings were issued.
Mexico is no stranger to major earthquakes. It is located on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
