Vallarta Celebrates Mexico's Bicentennial

September is the month when Mexico celebrates Fiestas Patrias, or Mexican Independence, with the Grito of "Viva Mexico!" This year marks the 200th Anniversary of Mexico's Independence and, here in Puerto Vallarta, there's plenty of entertainment and lots of activities going on all month long.

Bicentennial Celebrations and Events in Puerto Vallarta

Friday, September 10

8 pm: Coronation of Vallarta's Bicentennial Queen and Royal Court, Presidencia Municipal City Hall

Saturday, September 11

7 am - Limpia tu Delegación de Plástico, Clean Your Neighborhood Campaign, starts in Ixtapa

9 am - Unveiling of the sculpture "La Victoria del Bicentenario" by the Santa Maria Plaza, at the intersection of Fco. Medina Ascencio and the Libramiento

9:30 am - Reunión Comunida Vallartense (meeting of the Puerto Vallarta community) and the presentation of the National Anthem by the Vallarta Municipal Chorus at the Presidencia Plaza

10 pm - Presentation by the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Chorus in front of the entrance to the Presidencia

10:50 pm - Independence Day Speech - Lic. José de Jesús Sánchez, Guerra-Secretario General de Gobierno, will read Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s speech, "Arenga de Hidalgo" from the City Hall balcony.

11 pm - Traditional El Grito Ceremony - Puerto Vallarta Mayor Lic. Salvador González Reséndiz will deliver "El Grito," reenacting the historic cry for independence from the City Hall balcony, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the Municipal Chorus.

11:30 pm: Castillos and Fireworks at Los Arcos on the Malecón.

11:35 pm: Baile Popular - Public Street Dance in Puerto Vallarta's Main Square and on the Malecón.

Thursday, September 16
200th Anniversary of Mexico's War of Independence

8 am - Flag Raising Ceremony - the Mexican flag will be hoisted to full mast at the Presidencia Plaza

8:30 am - Civic Ceremony at Park Hidalgo

10 am - Traditional civic and military parade, through the main streets of Puerto Vallarta, starting at Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas and continuing up I. Vallarta, Morelos and Av. México (Downtown bus service disrupted.)

7 pm - Festival de la Independencia at Los Arcos Amphitheater with performances by popular musicians, singers and the Ballet Folklórico "Vallarta Azteca." The winning entries of the Bicentennial mural and poster contest will be on display.

Saturday, September 26

7 pm - Teatro Vallarta presents two stars of world classical music: the Strauss Orchestra of Vienna and violinist Edvin Marton together in concert for the Gala "Kings of Waltz". For more information, visit TeatroVallarta.com

8 am - Ceremony: Raising of the flag to full mast by the Elementos de Seguridad Pública

8:30 am - Civic Ceremony at Park Hidalgo

10 pm - Grupo Folklórico Municipal Xuitla will perform "Ballet del Bicentenario" at Los Arcos Amphitheater

Bicentennial Sporting Events in Vallarta:

As part of Mexico's Bicentennial celebrations, a series of sporting events are scheduled to take place in Puerto Vallarta through the end of the year:

• September 7-12 - People with Down Syndrome Athletics World Championship*

• September 8-11 - National Special Sports Championship*

• September 16, First Cycling Event with participation of other states and municipalities

• September 19, Local Athletic Career Bicentennial Event

* From September 7-12, Puerto Vallarta will host the first World Championships in athletics for people with Down Syndrome, with the participation of entrants from 21 countries. The President of the Mexican Federation of Special Sports, Miguel Angel Garcia, also expressed that the event will welcome about 500 competitors from across the country to participate in the 1st National Championship of Special Sports from September 8-11. Both events will attract more than 800 special athletes and companions, which represents an important impetus to Puerto Vallarta for sports tourism, and will include local celebrity athletes.

With the conclusion of 200th Anniversary of Mexican Independence in September, Mexico will begin preparing for a second dramatic event of the country’s history - the 100th Anniversary of the initiation of the Revolution on November 20, 1910.
