Mexico's Chief Immigration Official Resigns After Massacre of 72 Migrants

Cecilia Romero Castillo (Bloomberg)
The head of Mexico’s immigration agency resigned less than a month after the bodies of 72 migrants were found on a ranch near the U.S. border.

Cecilia Romero Castillo had headed Mexico’s National Immigration Institute since 2006, the Interior Ministry said today in an emailed statement. No replacement was named and the statement didn’t give a reason for the resignation.

Romero Castillo’s departure follows the Aug. 24 discovery of a mass grave with the bodies of Central and South American migrants, who Mexican officials say were probably killed by drug gangs operating in the state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas.

Criminal bands in the border region - some serving as human smugglers - have a history of extorting money from migrants, Mexico’s government says.
