The Foreign Ministry´s Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo, met in Geneva, Switzerland with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay, and the Director of the International Organization for Migration, Ambassador William L. Swing.

During the meeting with the High Commissioner, the two officials addressed the significant progress that has been made in Mexico in terms of human rights, as well as ways to strengthen collaboration between the government of Mexico and the OHCHR to meet the challenges and problems facing the country.

The High Commissioner acknowledged that Mexico has been a key partner in both strengthening the OHCHR and in the operation of the OHCHR in our country. She also referred to her upcoming participation in the Fourth Global Forum on Migration and Development to be held in Puerto Vallarta in November of this year.

Since 2002, at the invitation of the Mexican government, the OHCHR has had a representative office in the country. In February 2008, the OHCHR signed an agreement to continue its activities in Mexico, establishing the foundations for following up on the human rights situation and for identifying priority areas for technical cooperation with our government.

Undersecretary Gómez Robledo also met with IOM Director General William L. Swing to explore ways of bolstering efforts to address migration and expanding the range of joint actions in the handling and management of migration.

Among the proposals for cooperation are information campaigns for migrants; capacity building and the training of specialists in immigration issues; strategies for combating smuggling and trafficking in persons as well as improving the safety of migrants in transit.

Ambassador Swing acknowledged Mexico´s programs to protect migrants, such as the Beta Groups and the officials assigned to protect migrant children, and he offered the IOM´s unconditional support to the Mexican government in implementing public migration policies.

The IOM is an international organization that has extensive experience in providing services for managing international migration.
